Wine terroir

Wine terroir refers to the combination of natural and human factors that give a wine its distinctive identity: soil and subsoil composition, local climate, exposure, altitude, planted grape varieties and the grower's know-how. This French concept, recognised by the INAO as the basis of protected appellations, holds that a single variety expresses different characters depending on the precise place where it grows and how the vineyard is tended.
