William Reid
William Reid (1822-1888), son of a Scottish farmer from Kilmarnock, arrived in Madeira in 1836 at the age of fourteen for his health. After making his fortune in the Madeira wine trade, he set out to build a hotel bearing his name west of Funchal. Dying before its completion, his sons William and Alfred opened Reid's Palace in November 1891.
