Verismo
An Italian operatic movement of the late nineteenth century, paralleling literary realism, which stages ordinary people, often from humble classes, in brutal or passionate situations. Verismo favours dramatic intensity and direct emotion, exemplified by works of Mascagni, Leoncavallo and Puccini. This affecting repertoire features in the lyric seasons proposed to palace guests, offering raw human drama in contrast to the formality of earlier styles.
