UNESCO World Heritage Site

A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place officially recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding cultural, natural, or mixed universal value. The program started in 1972 and now lists 1,199 sites (2025). For travelers, staying at or near a UNESCO site is a signal of both significance and protection: development restrictions mean the surroundings stay intact, but expect crowds at the main attractions. Some luxury hotels are inside the protected perimeter itself (Aman Venice in a listed palazzo, Belmond at Iguaçu Falls National Park, Royal Mansour adjacent to Marrakech's listed medina). Booking these properties usually delivers privileged early or late access to the site itself.
