UNESCO Bruges historic centre

The Bruges historic centre (Brugge) designates the 430-hectare urban zone inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000, under criteria II, IV and VI (exceptional testimony of medieval Gothic brick art and cloth-trade urbanism). The perimeter includes the Grote Markt with the Belfort, the Burg with the Gothic city hall and Basilica of the Holy Blood, the canals (Reie, Dijver, Groenerei) and beguinages. The city counted around 45,000 inhabitants in the 14th century, one of the most populated in Europe. A notable point: 92 per cent of the built fabric within the walls is protected as Flemish regional listed monuments (UNESCO World Heritage, 2026).
