Toasting protocol

Toasting protocol refers to the conventions governing the moment a glass is raised in honour of a person or occasion. The host generally initiates it after the wine has been served, standing or remaining seated according to the formality, and speaks a few words. The person being honoured does not drink to their own health, offering only thanks. At palace dinners, this ritual frequently punctuates the official meal and marks its ceremonial high point.
