Table precedence

Table precedence refers to the hierarchical order governing where guests are seated and in what sequence they are served, determined by rank, age or the honour owed to them. At a formal banquet, the guest of honour occupies the host's right and is served first. Inherited from European courts, this protocol still shapes how palace dining rooms organise state dinners and receptions for visiting dignitaries and officials.
