Subak
Subak is the thousand-year-old cooperative irrigation system that has shaped Bali's rice terraces. UNESCO listed it as World Heritage in 2012 because it's three things at once: a hydraulic network (canals, tunnels, water sharing), a social institution (farmer assemblies), and a philosophical framework called Tri Hita Karana (harmony between people, nature, and the divine). For travelers, this matters because the iconic Bali rice terraces you see, like Jatiluwih and Tegallalang, are working subak landscapes, not theme parks. The best Ubud resorts (Mandapa, Four Seasons Sayan, Capella) sit within the active subak system and offer rice farmer encounters and water blessing rituals.
