Serac

A block or column of glacial ice, often formed where crevasses intersect. Sometimes as large as a house, a serac is unstable and may collapse with little warning, posing a serious hazard to mountaineers and skiers in high alpine terrain. The word comes from Swiss French, by analogy with a soft cheese. Knowledge of seracs forms part of the expertise of the guides who accompany palace guests across glaciated ground.
