Sahn

The interior courtyard of Islamic architecture, especially the formal court of a mosque, open to the sky and ringed by halls and porticoes. The sahn brings in light and natural ventilation, cools the building and offers a gathering place separated from the street. In Eastern riads and palace hotels it organises daily life around a central patio, often planted or animated by a fountain at its heart.
