Relish dish

A relish dish is a small, shallow oblong dish used to present hors d'oeuvres, condiments, crudites or butters at table. Made of porcelain, glass or silver plate, it is often set out in a series to compose an assortment. Its elongated shape sets it apart from the bowl and the small dish, and its slight depth suits preparations laid out flat. In palace service it also holds olives, almonds or pickles offered with the aperitif before the meal begins.
