Raffles Singapore
Raffles Singapore is a colonial hotel opened on 1 December 1887 by the four Armenian Sarkies brothers, initially as a ten-room property. The family also ran the Strand in Yangon and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang. The Singapore Sling cocktail was created there around 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon. A gazetted national monument, the hotel bears witness to the rise of tourism in Singapore under British rule.
