Pranayama

Pranayama is the ancient Indian practice of breath control, considered the fourth limb of the eight-limbed yoga system codified by Patanjali around the 2nd century BCE. It comprises specific breathing techniques designed to balance the nervous system, increase energy, and prepare the mind for meditation. Common techniques include alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana), fire breath (Kapalabhati), ocean breath (Ujjayi), and humming bee breath (Bhramari). Modern science confirms benefits for stress reduction, heart rate variability, and lung capacity. At wellness retreats, pranayama is usually integrated into yoga sessions or taught in dedicated 30-60 minute classes. Practical tips: practice on an empty stomach (2+ hours after eating), sit comfortably with a straight spine, and stop if you feel dizzy. Some advanced techniques aren't recommended during pregnancy or with high blood pressure.
