Planting density

Planting density refers to the number of vines grown per hectare, set by the spacing between rows and between individual plants. Quality Burgundy vineyards often reach 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare, a high density that puts the roots in competition and pushes each vine to restrain its output. High density is reputed to favour concentration and the deep rooting of the vine, though it raises cultivation costs.
