Pishtaq

A monumental gateway projecting from the facade of a building, formed by a rectangular frame enclosing an arched opening and usually associated with an iwan. A Persian term, the pishtaq is dressed with calligraphic bands, glazed tilework and geometric patterns. It magnifies the entrance of major Timurid and Mughal monuments and marks the ceremonial threshold of heritage palaces now welcoming guests.
