Pavilion

Lower portion of a cut stone, lying between the girdle and the culet. Its depth is decisive for light return: too deep and it darkens the stone, too shallow and light leaks out through the bottom. The pavilion reflects rays that entered through the crown back up toward the table. On a round brilliant it usually gathers twenty-four main and lower facets.
