Palace distinction (France)

"Palace" is a special French government distinction (created in 2010) given to a tiny number of five-star hotels that go beyond luxury into national heritage status. Managed by Atout France, the label currently belongs to roughly 30 properties across France, mostly in Paris (Bristol, Plaza Athénée, Crillon, Ritz, Four Seasons George V, Cheval Blanc Paris, etc.) plus a handful in the Riviera, Alps, and Corsica. To qualify, a hotel must already be five-star and demonstrate exceptional service, architectural significance, history, and contribution to French luxury heritage. The label is reviewed every five years. When you book a French "palace," expect rates from €1,500/night and an experience considered among the world's most refined.
