Muqarnas

Three-dimensional architectural ornament characteristic of Islamic art, built from tiers of small superimposed niches that resemble a honeycomb or stalactites. It appears chiefly beneath domes, half-domes and iwans, sometimes framing the mihrab. Carved from stucco, wood or stone, muqarnas dress the vaulting of heritage Eastern palace hotels such as the Royal Mansour in Marrakech, signalling refined craftsmanship to guests.
