Mihrab

A niche set into the wall of a mosque to indicate the qibla, the direction of Mecca toward which the faithful turn to pray. Frequently enriched with carved stucco, zellij mosaic or calligraphy, it forms the decorative focal point of the building. In palaces converted into hotels, a surviving mihrab testifies to the religious past of the site and adds documented heritage value to the property.
