Mezzo-soprano

A female voice of middle range, lying between the soprano and the contralto. The mezzo-soprano often embodies confidantes, rivals, sorceresses and mothers, as well as the trouser roles in which a female singer portrays a male character. Its warm, ample colour enriches the vocal balance of a cast. This range carries major roles in the operas proposed to palace guests, anchoring ensembles with its distinctive timbre and dramatic presence.
