Marine Protected Area (MPA)

A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a section of ocean managed under strict rules to protect marine ecosystems. Protection levels vary from no-take zones (no fishing or extraction at all) to regulated multi-use areas. Roughly 8% of the world's oceans are MPAs in 2025, with a global target of 30% by 2030. For travelers, this is one of the most reliable signals of healthy reefs and abundant fish: MPAs have measurably more biodiversity than surrounding waters.
