Johannes Badrutt

Johannes Badrutt (1819-1889), a Swiss hotelier from the Engadine, bought the Kulm in St. Moritz in 1858, the resort's first hotel. A wager made in 1864 to four English guests, invited to return in winter, is credited with launching Alpine winter tourism. He introduced electric lighting to the Kulm as early as 1878 and founded a long family hotel dynasty.
