Hacienda

A hacienda is a large historic estate from the Spanish colonial era, most famously in Mexico, but also in Andalusia, Peru and Bolivia. Built from the 1500s onward, they combined the owner's grand house (casa grande), a chapel, the worker quarters, and the agricultural operation (cattle, sugar, henequen, mezcal, coffee, whatever the region produced). Many were abandoned or fell into ruin in the 20th century. Mexico has converted dozens into outstanding luxury hotels, especially in the Yucatán: Hacienda Temozón, Hacienda Uayamón, Hacienda Petac, Hacienda San José (Belmond). They're famously photogenic, pink and ochre walls, original chapels, sometimes cenotes on the property.
