Facet

Flat, polished surface cut onto a gem to direct light. Facets act as small internal mirrors: their angles and arrangement determine how much light is reflected, and thus the stone's sparkle. The round brilliant carries fifty-seven or fifty-eight facets. The layout of the facets distinguishes the major cut families, from the brilliant to the step cut and the mixed cut that combines both approaches.
