Cutlery signals refer to the silent language by which a diner tells staff whether they are pausing or finished. Knife and fork crossed in a V on the plate indicate a brief pause; laid parallel, often pointing toward the four o'clock position or set at ten-twenty, they announce the course is complete. This discreet code lets the server clear at the right moment without needing to ask the guest anything aloud.
