Compensation upgrade

A compensation upgrade is when the hotel moves you to a better room category because of a problem, your room isn't ready when you arrive, the AC broke and they can't fix it, your view was different than promised, or they overbooked and had to walk you to another property. This is distinct from a "complimentary upgrade," which is a freebie given to loyalty members or for celebrations. When things go wrong, ASK for compensation politely but firmly. Reasonable requests: junior suite if your room wasn't ready, full suite if you lost a night of sleep, free breakfast or dinner for a major issue, points or future-stay credit for serious problems. Document everything in writing and don't be afraid to escalate to the General Manager if needed.
