Castrato
A male singer who underwent castration before puberty in order to retain a high, powerful soprano or alto voice, sustained by years of rigorous musical training. Castrati dominated Italian Baroque opera, taking the heroic roles. The practice has vanished, but their repertoire endures, performed today by countertenors in the lyric seasons proposed to palace guests, who can thereby hear a historic vocal tradition reimagined on the modern stage.
