Cadenza

An ornamental passage, improvised or written out, entrusted to a soloist in a rhythmically free style that allows a display of virtuosity. The cadenza usually appears toward the end of an aria or movement, where the singer or instrumentalist unfurls their most brilliant ornaments. Often prepared in advance, it crowns the great arias of the operas proposed to palace guests with a moment of individual brilliance and technical daring.
