Cabochon

Stone polished into a smooth, domed surface rather than faceted, usually resting on a flat base. This shaping suits opaque or translucent gems and those displaying optical effects such as asterism or a cat's eye. The cabochon historically predates the faceted cut. Palace jewellers use it for star sapphires and characterful semi-precious stones, where the rounded form best reveals the inner glow.
