BREEAM Building (UK)

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the UK's building sustainability rating, created by BRE in 1990, eight years before LEED. It's the oldest building environmental assessment method in the world. Five levels: Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Outstanding. It assesses energy, water management, materials, transport, waste, health, pollution, and biodiversity. For travelers, BREEAM dominates the European market (UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain) where LEED is more American. Hotel examples at Excellent level include The Pig Bridge Place and Wilderness Reserve Suffolk. BREEAM has had an International New Construction version since 2008, competing directly with LEED outside the US.
